The Universe of Characters: A publication commemorating the 60th anniversary of Shaken's founding. This book is a re-edited version of the calendar that Shaken has been publishing since 1975 under the title "The Ecosphere of Written Characters," a calendar series to explore the profound visual and mystical connections between typography and the universe.

This book is filled with the vast amount of typographic materials collected by graphic designer Kohei Sugiura. It also includes discussions on characters by Shuntaro Tanikawa, Shinichi Nakazawa, and Shinichi Kusamori. The project was planned and compiled by Shaken and Kohei Sugiura. The commentary is by Seigo Matsuoka.
